Prireja samostojne razstave mladih in tudi vrhunskih mednarodno uveljavljenih umetnikov, sodeluje z gostujočimi kustosi in s priznanimi evropskimi institucijami in razstavišči, izdaja strokovne publikacije, prireja predavanja in delavnice. Galerija Škuc je pomemben razstavni, prireditveni, založniški, raziskovalni in dokumentacijski center na področju sodobne vizualne umetnosti. Vse o tekočih dogajanjih in razstavah najdete na www.galerijaskuc.si/

Glasbeni program Društva ŠKUC je namenjen tistim uporabnikom glasbene kulture, ki jih zanimajo sodobne urbane smeri razvoja v različnih glasbenih zvrsteh. Začetki glasbene redakcije pri ŠKUC-u segajo v začetek osemdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja. Če povzamemo: prva kantavtorska plošča Tomaža Pengova, prva pankovska plošča Pankrtov, prvi postmodernistični happening skupine Laibach, organizacija večine tujih koncertov pri nas in kopica domačih, od osemdesetih let pa vse do danes. Prvi smo izdali fanzin.

Sodobni program glasbene redakcije zaznamujejo naslednje sekcije:

Program: www.skuc.org/ksb/

The Banshees, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Kraftwerk, Mark Lanegan in Nick Cave &The Bad Seeds.

ŠKUC Ventilator združuje priznane domače glasbenike, avtorje in producente. Pod okriljem te sekcije so nastali večeri Chilli space, katerih osnova je ustvarjanje prijetnega glasbenega ambienta s pretežno downtempo zvrstjo elektronske glasbe združenega s posebnim vizualnim ambientom. Vsako leto v okviru sekcije izide tudi kompilacijska zgoščenka z najnovejšo produkcijo tovrstne elektronske glasbe mladih domačih avtorjev.  www.facebook.com/chillispace/

Topografije zvoka, mednarodni simpozijski festival zvočnih umetnosti je cikel koncertov, performansov, predavanj, poslušalnic in diskusij, preko katerih predstavljamo sodobne, predvsem elektro-akustične oblike zvočnih umetnosti.

ŠKUC is one of the leading non-governmental organisations promoting non-profit cultural and artistic activity in Slovenia. It holds the status of an association working in the public interest in the cultural field. Its beginnings date back to Ljubljana’s first radical student movement of 1968, while it was formally established on 31 January 1972. In the late 1970s and in the 1980s ŠKUC was one of the key initiators, supporters and promoters of alternative culture. Today, ŠKUC’s main goals are to support young and promising artists by including them in the cultural sphere and to organise creative spare-time activities for young people.

In the past few years the activities of ŠKUC have expanded to areas such as providing information and counselling for young people, education, library and archive resources, social affairs, prevention, social sciences, the humanities as well as research activities. It has also acquired the status of an association working in the public interest in the area of health care.

ŠKUC actively co-operates with similar youth centres from across Slovenia, as well as with other organisations, mainly through programme exchange. The ŠKUC premises located at 21 Stari trg, Ljubljana, are open to many organisations organising events such as round tables, seminars, talks with journalists, dance performances, lectures on various social, art and topical issues, video projections etc.

ŠKUC is involved in the following activities:

v i s u a l

In the late 1970s, ŠKUC opened its own exhibition space as a response to the mainstream exhibition policy of established national galleries and art institutions in Slovenia at the time. The Škuc Gallery has been located at 21 Stari trg in Ljubljana since 1978. In the 1980s the Gallery became the centre of alternative (sub)culture in Slovenia. Since the outset the Gallery has also been engaged in presenting contemporary visual art from the international scene. The Gallery organises solo exhibitions of both young Slovenian and world-renowned artists, collaborates with visiting curators and prominent European institutions and galleries, publishes specialist publications, and organises lectures and workshops. The Škuc Gallery has become an important exhibition, entertainment, publishing, research and documentation centre of contemporary visual arts. Information about current exhibitions and other activities can be found at www.galerijaskuc.si/.

The ŠKUC Association music program targets music culture users interested in contemporary, urban trends across music genres. The beginnings of the ŠKUC music section date back to the 1980s. To recap: the first folk album by Tomaž Pengov, the first punk album by Pankrti, the first post-modernist happening by Laibach, the organisation of the majority of foreign act concerts in Slovenia as well as a number of Slovenian acts from the 1980s onwards. We published the first fanzine. The sections involved in organising music events were ROPOT, BUBA, ART ROCK and AFK. In the 1980s, ŠKUC organised the famous Rock in Opposition festival (1980–1984), the Ankaran/Coastal Scene festival (1987–1994) and without a doubt the most important rock event in Slovenia called Novi Rock (19812003).

Today’s music program is organised by the following sections:

ŠKUC Buba has been a music section of ŠKUC since 1987. It is the organiser of a vast array of music events based mostly on rock expression, which does not necessarily mean it is strictly limited as regards its music taste since it actively keeps pace with the world’s music trends by experimenting with electronic, ethno and jazz music genres. BUBA promotes performers who represent the best of current music genres, while at the same time setting new criteria for up-and-coming artists. Buba has organised major concerts of groups such as Animal Collective, Tindersticks, Anna Calvi and tUnE-yArDs.

ŠKUC ROPOT is undoubtedly one of our most important sections that has been active since 1981, with over 100 major concerts under its belt thus far. Among others, ROPOT has organised concerts of bands of the likes of Siouxsie & The Banshees, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Kraftwerk, Mark Lanegan and Nick Cave &The Bad Seeds. www.skuc.org

Music in Stari trg started in the 1990s with the organisation of summer concerts in Stari trg. This concert cycle mostly gives the stage to music bands that have not yet had a chance to play big venues but have the potential to do so in the future. A common thread to these events is original, non-commercial music and blending music with other forms of artistic expression. www.skuc.org

ŠKUC Ventilator brings together renowned Slovenian musicians, authors and producers of electronic music. It has been organising electronic music nights since 2001 and, in this time, has established itself as a strong producer and promotor of Slovenian electronic music. www.facebook.com/chillispace/

Another important music cycle that has recently been a part of our music program and features mainly alternative authors of the younger generation is Ropotarnica. The purpose of this concert cycle is to provide alternative musicians and their bands with more frequent and regular opportunities to present their work, thereby establishing a space for them to come face to face with and socialise with their audience.

f i l m

Since 1974, the ŠKUC film section has helped enrich the audience’s film culture with numerous alternative, avant-garde and experimental films and videos. In 1978–1994, over 210 different film projects were organised at the ŠKUC premises at 21 Stari trg 21 and at 4 Kersnikova Street, as well as other venues around Ljubljana. From 1978 to 1985, the film section was the producer of several experimental and alternative films.

The then film section expanded in 1986 to become an independent professional organisation called E-motion film. Slovenia’s first full-length animation film entitled Socialising the Bull is a co-production of ŠKUC and E-motion film.

In 2002, the film section was revived through the production of a feature-length film, and since 2004 the ŠKUC FILM section has mainly focused on the production of documentary and socially engaging films.

p u b l i s h i n g

Publishing activity was launched in 1972 with the release of collections of poetical works by young artists. It continued by setting up Studia humanitatis, a series of translations of fundamental humanist texts and publishing a number of magazines and publications such as Gayzine, Lesbozine, Roza Vix, M’zin (a magazine for culture), Revolver (a magazine for culture and politics with a homoerotic thrust), Kekec (a gay tabloid), Pandora (a newsletter with a lesbian taste) and Rock Vibe (a magazine for rock and alternative music). Today, ŠKUC regularly publishes books within the Vizibilija and Lambda series. The Vizibilija series publishes books with explicit lesbian topics, as well as literature works and essay, scientific and theoretical texts in the fields of lesbian and feminist studies – literary and film theories, body discourses and policies, gender and sexuality theories, sexual policies developed through historical periods, queer theories etc. So far the Lambda series has seen more than 50 books being published (both literature and humanist) with gay and lesbian topics. More information about these books can be found at http://www.skuc.org/trgovina/knjige/ The ŠKUC LL section publishes LESBO (www.ljudmila.org/lesbo/lesbo.htm), a political, social and cultural magazine that is the successor of the Lesbozine fanzine (1988, 1989) and the Pandora newsletter (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996). This non-profit magazine has been published since 1997.

Since the middle of the 1980s ŠKUC has embraced marginalised groups in Slovenia’s society and made efforts to improve their socialisation and spread awareness of and information on their alternative lifestyles and cultures. The Slovenian gay and lesbian movement began in 1984 (with the establishment of the Magnus section) and 1987 (with the establishment of the LL section) respectively as a pioneer in this field in Eastern Europe. Today, sections actively working in this area are ŠKUC LL (a lesbian section), and the Section for Equal Opportunities – REM bringing together Magnus (a gay section), Žmreža (a program promoting women’s and lesbian artistic creativity which functions as a room of one’s own for music, visual and film art and literature), as well as numerous LGBTQ+ interest groups. In the field of civil rights, ŠKUC is the organiser of the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, educational activities on homosexuality and AIDS, exhibitions, the Lezbomanija radio show broadcast by Radio Student, the publisher of magazines and books, etc. More information about these activities can be found at www.ljudmila.org/siqrd and www.ljudmila.org/lesbo.

The Lesbian (LGBT) Library and Archives have been open since 2001, and offer free membership. Specialising mainly in gender-related and sexuality topics, the library is considered to be the most comprehensive special collection of literature on homosexuality in Slovenia. It includes literary works, GLBT theory, periodicals, and audiovisual collections, documents on human rights, media and documentary archives. The library’s catalogue is available at www.ljudmila.org/lesbo.

Cultural Centre Q / Club Tiffany is a gay club, an LGBTQ+ community centre and a project space. It organizes cultural, youth, social, educational and socialising events. The main on-going projects of its own production include the Tiffany Cabaret, the Lesbian Feminist University, the Chemsex program, community discussions and social and club nights. The is available at www.kulturnicenterq.org.

Also active in the civil rights movement is the lesbian Monokel Club focusing on socialisation, program building and the promotion of lesbian culture and lifestyles. www.klubmonokel.com.

The theatre section took its first steps in the late 1970s in the street with some notable street and ambient performances. The first generation produced some of today’s well-recognised theatre actors and groups. After its auspicious start and a long period of inactivity, the ŠKUC THEATRE again came to life in 2000. One of its main guidelines is connecting young professional stage artists with established theatre names. The selection of dramaturgical texts is based on staging world premieres and debut performances in Slovenia. In its production, the Theatre devotes special attention to issues of marginalised social groups and gives precedence to taboo topics in our daily lives. The annual production comprises up to three performances of its own production or in co-production with other groups and theatre houses. ŠKUC Theatre strives to be socially engaged, daring and critical. Its theatre space is marked by a wide range of theatre poetics and practices. In addition to its production for adults, its program also includes performances for children and young people. The artists working on ŠKUC Theatre projects have received numerous Slovenian and international awards for their work. Our productions tour both in Slovenia and abroad. All the information about the work and performances of ŠKUC Theatre can be found at www.skuc.si

The Biennial presents young artists (the age limit for participation is 30 years) from various areas of artistic activity. ŠKUC is the national co-ordinator and selector for Slovenia.

– Živa književnost / Living Literature Festival is one of the first festivals of literature and music to present local and foreign writers, poets and musicians. What distinguishes this festival from other literary recitals is its link between literature and music, along with the festival venue itself – the street. In June each year it is organised in front of the ŠKUC premises at 21 Stari trg, Ljubljana.

– Dobimo se pred Škucem / Let’s Meet in Front of ŠKUC – music, literature, theatre and dance evenings scheduled every July in order to complement and revive summer evenings in Ljubljana’s Old Square (Stari trg). In addition, the program includes a mini theatre festival called Teater v galeriji / Theatre in the Gallery, workshops for children, as well as the Škuceva tržnica / ŠKUC Market, a sales exhibition of art works by young artists.

– Škucove packarije / ŠKUC Doodles is the title of Saturday children’s matinees. They include free puppet shows and creative workshops, thereby allowing children to spend their spare time actively.

– The Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is an event with the longest tradition in this field in Europe. In the course of its rich history, it has played an important role as regards both the emancipation of new social movements, as well as the social and aesthetic awareness of gay, lesbian and wider populations. It is organised each year at the end of November in Slovenska kinoteka, with repeat screenings in cinemas around Slovenia.
